Early Airway Beacon Light

The original location of this old 62 foot airway beacon tower is unknown. In the 1950’s this unique airway beacon tower was purchased and relocated to it’s present day undisclosed location. The top of the tower contains a 24 inch beacon light with an opening on the top of the beacon, which is covered in clear glass.  This allows two things to occur.

1. As the pilot flies toward the flashing beacon the pilot will begin seeing the beam along with the flash until the angle between the planes height and the beacon become so great that the beam is no longer visible to the pilot, however, light is also projected upwards through the top of the beacons clear glass window, giving the pilot additional guidance as the plane passes overhead.

2. The beam of light shinning up through the top of the beacon will also reflect off the base of any clouds present to assist the pilot in determining cloud height in the dark.
