Wake Island En Route Center, 1966

I went to Vietnam, courtesy of the Army, arriving in Dec 1966.  I flew on a C-141 from Travis AFB near San Francisco to Ton Shan Nut AFB, near Saigon.  We stopped at Wake Island, where I took this picture.  I went inside and talked with the on-duty communicators and enjoyed a short visit with them.

At one time, the FAA had complete “jurisdiction” of Wake Island. The agency operated ALL facilities on the island, including not only the airport and related ATC and fueling operation… but also a cafeteria and lodging facility.

Automation is coming to flight service station functions.  Data systems specialist Merrill Butler, demonstrates a CRT console with a computer in-put keyboard designed for any position.

Sheridan FSS was commissioned 1939 and decommissioned on June 7, 1995.

1958
In 1958, Sheridan FSS or better know as CAA back then, had an open house on May 26, 1958,  according to a local newspaper article.  The staff at this time were named as follows:  Charles F. Merchant, station chief of operations; Frank W. Barnhill, Max E. Taylor, Jerrold D. Reed, Paul J. Barina, Carl H. Moore, and Jack C. Roush.

1970
An August 20, 1970 Sheridan newspaper named the following Specialists stationed at Sheridan:  Darrel Downing, chief, Max Taylor, Jerrold Reed, Jack Roush, Emery Matthews, Howard Naylor, Louis Robinson, and Fred Bergman.
